Why do the Brits drive on the wrong side of the road?

Question:
For those of you in the U.K.
Why do the Yanks drive on the right side of the road (ha)?
Seriously, why is there this big difference in culture where the steering wheels are on different sides of the car.
Is there a reason for this? Or did it just happen?
Has anyone tried renting a car over the pond? I bet that's not easy to do, huh?

yep the question is why do Americans drive on the right. when they largely came from England in the fist place ?
I've lived in uk and usa, so I drive both ways... Its confusing when you go from one place to the other... but no difference really.

America also uses imperial measurements.
Metric was invented much later.

Are the headlights of a car suppsed to be at the same brightness and angle on both sides? If no, why?
