Can you drive out of state on a NJ drivers permit?

Question:
I can not find the answer to this question anywhere. wherever you go on the NJ DMV website every other question but this one is answered. Anyone I ask says "I don't know what the actual law is but I did it and no one said anything." The thing is I have a four hour drive into upstate NY is it ok to drive there?

Answers:

Okay, two exact same cars, 100 miles, One goes 60mph, other 80mph, would it be ALOT more $ conservitave?

Call the DMV directly, but I believe that the permit is only good for your state. So one that is in NJ would not do you any good in NY. A permit gives you limited times and distances you can drive and in some states stipulates who can be in your car.
