Question:
I have seen other startup companies producing cars that can go 75 mph for 100, or 200 miles. Maybe Chevy doesn't really want an electric car to be successful? Remember the EV-1? In the 90's that car was getting 60 to 100 miles per charge.

The promotion for this car is puzzling - the Volt is a plug-in hybrid, and has a gas engine in addition to the electric drivetrain, which is why it only needs a 40-mile range. But GM has often been heard promoting this as an electric car. I heard a GM spokesperson on NPR today, who didn't even mention that the Volt has a gasoline engine.*
You are correct that a number of recently announced pure electric cars put the Volt to shame. The Tesla electric sportscar, for instance, has a 250-mile range:

And the Phoenix electric pickup truck, which is already in production, also has up to a 250-mile range. It also can charge batteries in as little as TEN minutes, and has a 250,000 mile battery life:

The Volt isn't entirely electric, as it also has a small petrol engine. It's like todays hybrids only the battery is the major power source, rather than the engine. The caar will keep going after the 40 miles by switching to petrol power, and all this saves energy and increases economy.leon has it. you didnt listen to the whole story..now go study
