be sure to test drive the car first. if it isn't comfortable for you then don't get it. you should also check under the hood for dirt and grime, bandaged hoses, broken belts, any unusaual sounds, etc.make sure there is tread on the tires and no wire sticking out of them. ask them for repair reciepts, an honest person always keeps them in the glove box.good luck.

You have already made a good choice in staying away from dealers. Used car salesmen are scum.Find someone a little bit more familiar with cars to go along with you is the best advice i can give. Dont set your mind on one certain make or model-when it comes to a older used car its more about how well the car has been taken care of than who built it. Really-if you do some good research and take along someone with a little knowledge you should be able to find something decent to get you around for that money.
Reliable, private party, and $2000, are not likely three things you will find in a used car. If you must buy private party (rather than using that $2000 as a down payment), look for mileage (try to find something with no more than 150k miles if it is a toyota, nissan, or handa, other than that, most cars won't be reliable for much longer, if that long at all). Also make sure that the maintinence was kept up and that it hasn't been in a major accident (you should be able to use Carfax for this). *Don't buy anything with a Salvage Title! Prior to signing the title or sales agreement, I would also have the vehicle inspected by a technician for basic maintenance issues so you know what your getting into. If you don't, at least have someone that knows cars and what possible problems to look for in a used car go with you.
Many credit unions will actually finance used vehicles, even ones purchased through private parties, so that may be an option for you as well. You should be able to find a reliable car, made in the last 5-6 years that has decent miles, and that is reasonable priced. To get a loan from a credit union, you will have to pass a credit check, but theirs are a little looser than others, and you will have to start an account with them. If you use $1000 that you have to open the account and the other $1000 as a down payment on a $6000-7000 car (financing $5-6k), your payment should be around $200 a month (on a 36 month loan). Again, this is just an option, but may be worth looking into rather than droping your entire $2000 on a car that may or may not last you the next couple years.
2lessons till my drivin test, wot do i do??
check into auctions in your area especially police and dealer auctions. the police and dealer auctions sometimes have fees but ive seen cars that i would have paid 3000 dollars for go for 800-1500 bucks. find them soon because most of them only run once a week atleast in my area.Is the premium gasoline better than the regular one?
like every body else said, take someone with you that knows a minute about cars, and get there early so you can check out the cars that are there( look for major leaks, check mileage, and even bring a code scanner cuz a lot of them have the check engine light on) code scanners are pretty cheap just look at an advanced auto or murrays or something of the like
