What happened to fuel consumption targets?

When I was a kid in the 70s I remember the 'energy crisis' when the arabs increased the price of fuel. As I remember it the American congress set strict fuel consumption goals and soon American cars got smaller. Now when I look on the internet lots of models seem to have 400 hp V8s, or are large SUVs.

I think they are waiting to see how many of us are really willing to rid our bicycles again. This is getting ridiculous. Sell your gas guzzler and buy another motorcycle. For us with families, start making people trailers for motorcycles and more sidecars.

also the auto industry basically makes up the mpg rasting on vehicles sold today. the formula they use is from 1960 or so which is not accurate at all on todays fuel injected cars. thats why u buy a big truck that will get 21mpg and u can never get more that 8 mpg. they are refiguring this system and will have a new one in place soon so the american people and the government know just how much are cars suck - fuel that is
