Technically the USA has only the "Big Two" GM and Ford, since Chysler is owned by Diamler Benz of Germany.
I am NOT asking which one will survive....but what one SHOULD survive. Which car compnay best represents the "American" car industry in your view?

i mechanic for a living,,and i think they all should survive,,because a lot of Americans will be without jobs if they close down,and besides that ,they have always been the big 3,,its hard to put a price on that many years of building cars,,they just need to improve so they can keep up with the competition,,good luck hope this help,s.to lose either one will allow no America as it will cause a mass slide of depression across the land. economic times for the country would be hard. look at it right now...its not the greatest...why? car industry is off by over 40% and its effecting the economy greatly.
just sit back and try to imagine how many jobs would be gone if just one of them closed up.
besides all those that work at the factory, the big wigs, the janitors...but it also goes out to all the part companies and all their employees, also goes into the metal industry, the paint industry, the plastic industry. then after all that it still has to hit and close all the car dealerships and franchises. so now all those owners, salesmen, secretaries, mechanics. not to mention all the business's that tend to those dealerships. as in sell them supplies, services, dent removal, stickers, interior repair services, detailing services, trucking cars around. plus it even effects the auctions as now there are less buyers in the pool and less used coming into the pool. not to mention all the insurance companies, loan companies, banks, warranty companies, web design companies...the list is endless almost.

smart thing for both of them to do is shred the old image of big and corporate. they need to be reborn again, cut all waste, close all dead end cars and companies, etc.

like GM....close off Saturn, Buick...they don't pull enough weight. import more Opel cars and make them the normal line up of cars for Chevy.

chrysler is doing better then the other because they think and come up with new styles on there own like the pt cruiser viper mini van and so ongm is good quaility.

all 3 can make it pure and simple but one workers and all staff must be paid less.

Which is more of a family car?
They should all survive. With out them many people would be with out jobs. And the sport and muscle cars would be gone. There would only be front wheel drive cars. That would suck.They all deserve to survive. Our domestic automakers (all of them) have come back from beyond the grave (remember the seventies?) and really do build decent, dependable cars and trucks. They put the knife in the hands of the Japanese when they negoitated their profits away to the unions in the sixties and seventies and now are paying the price. IF they survive this last hurdle (and enough retired union workers die soon) I feel certain they will never make the mistake of funding medical and retirement for thousands of overpaid assembly line workers again. Furthermore, the days of building junk cars in the U.S. are over. Even the lowest Chevy Malibu or Dodge Neon is twenty times the vehicle produced by China and France. Who will survive? I guess I would put my money on Chrysler. They learned the lesson ten years sooner than Ford or GM so they have a good head start.
