Corn takes a lot of irrigation in an already fresh-water short world, while both saw grass and hemp (not the smokable kind) take nearly NO irrigation, yet yield up to TEN TIMES the Ethanol per acre, as corn! Must be a political reason for doing the dumb thing doomed to failure - again.

Do you know what percent of corn raised in the US is under irrigation? It is less than 12%. It's mostly dryland. They conversion is easier from corn. And for the farmer; easier storage, transportation, use existing equipment, and he will use his existing farming practices. They are pushing corn, because corn is a major product of the united states. A lot of the promotion of ethanol is funded by the corn industry. To use corn, means that we would not have to restructure the current agricultural setup in the Midwest. Farmers are already equipped to produce corn. They would not adopt ethanol as readily if they had to purchase new equipment and farming techniques.How to blockade a house door that opens out?
Of coarse, this is just a transition tactic. Once the public has taken an interest in ethanol, and has the proper vehicles to use the product, the industry will then explore alternative ways to produce ethanol quicker and cheaper.
