Is vehicle exhaust just "unburned fuel?"?

Question:
Is it true that the exhaust that comes out of the tailpipe is just "unburned fuel", and if you were able to find a way for the "fuel to burn more completely", then there'd be LESS exhaust?? I thought exhaust was the result of combustion, and there was no way to "make the fuel burn more completely so that there'd be less exhaust?"

A percentage of th exhaust, depending on how efficient the engine is,will be unburnt fuel.Engines aren't 100% efficient.Matter cannot be destroyed. There will never be less exhaust.

Toll roads?

You can make your vehicle burn the fuel more completely but exhaust is still exhaust. If it were unburned fuel you could put a match there and start a fire. But this won't happen. If your car is getting to much gas and can't burn it all you will have black smoke coming from the tail pipe. But you are right exhaust is the result of combustion.

Rear lights black?

the exhaust is what is made after the fuel is burned. if your car is running properly, there should not be any unburned fuel coming out of the exhaust. you will have the same amount of exhaust, but what kind it is depends if the engine is burning all of the fuel. also, if the engine is burning oil, the exhaust will be different than normal.

If a 4-cycle engine is not burning all the fuel, it is because something is preventing it from doing it; (air-fuel ratio, computer, faulty air filter)

Why are japanesse cars so dominate compared to american cars ?

When you burn a fuel your putting it though a chemical change. the part of the fuel that can be used by fire is spent. The by-product is what we call exhaust. as it passes in to the catalytic converter another chemical change takes place where the exhaust is re-burned or reused by the catalyst. from there you have another by-product that is still exhaust, It's just a different form (most often CO2) Any time you release energy you only use about 60 to 70 % of it as energy. The rest is given off as heat and exhaust. as we breath oxygen we process it our body's burn it and then give of CO2 as a by-Product. Your not making less you are just changing the chemistry behind it.
