Question:
I am looking at one that is for sale now, and was not sure about a few things, in particular, how long do they last compared to a normal, for example 5.7L in terms of mileage. This one has 228,000. I know diesels tend to last longer, but how much? Any information is needed. Thanks

There is a reason that Chevy quit making these engines and hired Isuzu to make the Duramax.Yeah, these engines can last quite a while, but are not the most trustworthy. If you have had the engine your whole life and worked on it and kept maintenance and such yourself, it could be trustworthy. But since this is used, who knows what you will get out of it?
I assume this is the 6.5 liter Detroit, and with it you will get better mileage than a similar year of gas engine vehicle. You can expect to get 14 city/17 highway with the diesel. Not impressive, but better than 12 city/15 highway for the 5.7 liter gas engine.
I would look for a newer diesel, unless you are handy and like to work on older vehicles.
Good luck.

228 is a little high, but if it was taken care of it should last to 300+. they are sort of high in maintenance, you have to regularly change fuel filters.Three wheel trims, is this illegal?
Don't know much about such small diesels. I know someone that drives Detroit Deisel Series 60's (12.8 litre inline 6) and he says that you shouldn't need to do anything to it until you hit 1 million miles.More Questions & Answers ...
