The engine was not overheating and the smell was not there in the engine. Any ideas? The oil was very low - could it have been that?

there may have been a heating system problem , not in the engine. or in electric system. check that all fuses you have are connected right. i mean .. sometimes accidentally they can put 20 ohm fuse in 10 ohm connection case.

you could be burning because there is no oil in the engine definatly. check the water as well. i would say its the oil though. might be worth checking the exhaust could be fumes from there. or the air conditioning that can cause a burning smell even if its just burning a bit of dust.What companies will be mass producing ethanol vehicles?

the first thing to check is you oil level if u r unsure how to do this then yuor manual should help,however if the oil is fine have a quick look under the car incase a plastic bag has attached itself to your exhaust.It is also possible that u have burnt out the clutch!the best thing for u to do if the first 2 things turn up nothing is take it to dealers itshould still be under warranty.U better hope not as the garage will know if u ran the engine oil low damaging the engine, for a start the oil will go like treacle.

Yes, lack of oil will give you a burning smell even though your temp gauge is registering OK. I take it this was on a short journey.Your temp gauge relates to the water temperature.

I take it you've topped up your oil. Try it again and hope that no further damage has occurred.

If this is a car from Japan - or Europe - it came here on a ship (assuming you are in North America). When they ship these cars they spray them with a protective coating underneath to resist corrosion of the salt air. dealers are supposed to wash this stuff off at vehicle prep - they don't always do it. This stuff can cook off for months.The low oil is a concern. make sure cylinder head covers are not leaking down on to exhaust pipes. that will do it too.
