Is it true an automatic transmission car / jeep / 4x4 should not be used to tow caravans, trailers, horseboxes etc as it damages the transmission. Surely for example an SUV like a Nissan Murano 4x4 with a 3.5 V6 litre engine and a CVT, (Constant Variable Transmission) would be well equipped to tow a caravan with ease, but I'm told by some people that you shouldn't buy a car/jeep/4x4 with automatic or CVT transmission if you intend towing anything, be it a caravan, trailer, horsebox etc etc. Can anyone shine some light into this subject for me please??

It really has nothing to do with the type transmission, it has more to do with the capacity of the vehicle. If you wanted to get a watchdog, would you start by looking at chihuahuas? Likewise, if you want to tow relatively heavy loads, don't look at Jeeps or Ford Taurus with or without automatic transmissions.Instead look at vehicles designed with tow capacity. Chevrolet C3500 HD for example would be a place to start looking.

I wouldn't want to tow anything unless the tow vehicle weighed at least 3500 pounds and was rated for it. Then I would install a transmission cooler and rear heavy duty spring shocks.nowadays it makes little difference , a manual gearbox (especially with a low box) will come into it's own when you get stuck in a muddy field but who goes camping in a muddy field ?

The concern is with the transmission overheating. You can add on a transmission cooler that will mostly solve this problem. Having one installed is not too expensive.Even been in this sort of car accident?

Hi fizz i had a caravan a towed it with a 2.0litre carina E and it was perfect my neice has one now a like you she tows it with a mitisbushi shogun 2.?? litre and its no bother as with towing any thing it depends on the driver and also when driving up hill you need a good run at it to achieve your goal to the top.go for it . it will be a doddle to you.

I tow a 26ft caravan ,in and out of muddy fields, with a Jeep Cherokee 4lt Ltd AUTO . Never been stuck ! Unlike many of my friends with their so called "real gearboxs" ie manual !With the type of vehicle you're talking about, absolutely no question.
The bigger the engine = Increased specifications = greater build quality.
Plus, it's a far better ride quality.

Auto trans. 4x4s are fine for towing as long as you stay within the manufacturers specs. when performing the task. I mean why would the manufacturer sell them with tow bars?Here my story;
I bought a 1990 Silverado with Automatic years ago to pull my 32 Foot 5th Wheel. It the 700-R4 that have overdrive. My friend works on Transmissions and I ask him how it would hold up. He said; "I get a lot of those in here" Aggggh!! But, he also told me; "When you pulling the 5th Wheel, just shift into Drive and not the Overdrive" So, this is what I have done for almost 10 years now and have never had a problem.
