this sounds stupid, but i get out of first now with no problem but am now working on making the transition smoother. When i shift to second, 3rd, 4th, 5th. I release the gas and push down the clutch. then i shift, let go of the clutch and accelerate. after shifting should i let out the clutch slowly as i accelorate? or should i let go of the clutch completely then accelorate?

Actually everyone who has ever driven with a manual has asked these same questions. The "feel" of the throttle, clutch and transmission shifter working in tandem with each other is practically unique to each car. A smooth shift from 1st to 2nd is always the most difficult to master. This is because universally the gear ratio difference from first to second is much wider than between any of the other gears. So do not be discouraged by a rough 1/2 shift - everyone's 1/2 shift was rough at first. First learn how to shift smoothly from 3rd to 4th or 4th to 5th then work down. As the other responders said, practice concurrent smooth application of clutch, throttle and gear shifts. If you know anyone who can drive a stick shift smoothly, ask him or her how they do it. What he or she tells you will probably be unique to their car, but it give you an idea how it is done.Let the clutch out smoothely, and then accelerate. If you try to accelerate before you release the clutch, it will be jerky, and you will more than likely wear out the clutch. It will take some practice, but you'll get the hang of it.
