Suprizingly enough, you dont waste too much gas at all! The first inital turn your key in the engine is what takes the most gas. So, if you are going to warm your car off leave it running instead of shutting it off after 5-10 mins and restarting it....that takes much more gas than to actually let it run! Anytime it is cold outside it is best on your car if you warm it up awhile before you drive it anyway, PLUS, you'll be warm too!what is the break down maintenance in automobile?

Unless you live in Fairbanks, Alaska, the less your car idles, the better mileage you will get. However, since the transmission/transaxle needs to warm up a bit (the lubricant is pretty thick at below zero temps) and the tires are a bit out of round, the mileage will also be temporarily lower if you just get in, start it up, and drive away.

This is an age-old question that has never really been satisfactorily answered, to my knowledge. For the most part, 2-3 minutes is more than sufficient in cold temperatures; just make sure in extremely cold temps (like under freezing) you start the car in neutral to allow the transmission to warm up. Manual transmissions don't have that problem as much but should still warm up a bit.
