Renewing my permit ?

Question:
ok... my permit expired in september... but i have been really busy with other stuff and havent been able to go and renew it... when i go back to dmv to renew it, am i going to have to take the test again to get my permit ? i heard that as long as it was within a year (((it may have been 6 months, which im still in))) i wouldnt have to retake it...
anyone know if this is true ? i live in pa if it makes a difference...
