yes no problem,look in the handbook and it will give you the maximum towing weights the manufacturer recommends,both with or without breaks on the trailer you are towing.Most organisations recommend that you only tow something with a maximum weight of 3/4 of the gross weight of your own vehicle for stability and safety reasons.You should be able to tow most lightweight caravans up to about 17 ft with your Astra.

Which brand of tire is better?

Look in the owner's manual and it will give you the towing weights and tongue weight.

I towed mine (16 feet) with a 1.4 Astra no problem. Its not the pulling but the braking when you worry about weight.

A 1.8 engine is more than enough to pull most caravans (assuming your car is in good working order).
