I think because they thought that was the simplest design at the time, then when they relized that design stunk, and the screwdriver kept slipping all the time, they came up with a better design, the phillips head.temper temper ! it is simple so it was done.
To fit flathead screws. The problem was that they had all these flathead screws but no way to screw them. All they had was a Phillips head screwdriver. I think it was a communication problem between the screw makers and the screwdriver makers. It's a good thing that they reached an agreement, otherwise we would all be screwed.
