Yes you can and will get poisoned if you get an exhaust leak before to cat. On some ford you have a exhaust transfer pipe at the rear of the cylinder heads which was designed to allow your smog/air pump to ingest clean air in to help with pollution control. I would check that pipe very close for leaks.
