Question:
Forgive me for a lack of technical terms here, as I know little about cars...
The vehicle is leaking power steering fluid from a rubber (I think) tube the runs behind/near the front tire on the driver's side.
Now, if I look under there, I can see a crack in the tube from which the fluids are leaking.
The thing is, it's had trouble before and a mechanic gave a $400 estimate to have the whole thing replaced, but I can't afford that...
Are there any other ways to fix it cheaply, without replacing the whole thing?
I tried electrical tape, but with the freezing winter weather and the greasy tube, the tape just won't stick...
What should I do? I barely get by on my meager paycheck as is and can't afford to have it fixed...
Answers:
Which is better? rear engine bus or the one with front engine? why?
It is probably just the hose that's cracked. In that case, you can go to the dealer, or a NAPA parts store and buy a new hose and either install it yourself or have a friend who knows what he (or she) is doing install it for you. That $ 400 estimate sounds a bit steep, unless the mechanic has determined there is damage to the powersteering pump as well as the leaking hose.Do you guys think a lexus 98 gs-400 is a girly car?
Try a friend maybe they can fix it. With any luck you may have a TEC-Center in the area that highschool kids go to so they can learn a trade they can fix it cheaply. Or ask a local mechanic if you can go on a payment plan. But driving it without fluid will cause other things to go bad and you may end up having to buy a whole new rack-n-pinionSounds like the high pressure line is leaking, take it somewhere else and see if they'll just replace the line.
