Most folks would be in a lot of trouble. I wouldn't mind using a horse and buggy despite the fact I'd have to buy a buggy, and a younger horse trained to pull the buggy. But then I live in North East Texas in a small rural town and have enough land to keep a horse on.Folks in big city's like Dallas, or worse New York or Los Angeless would just be up the proverbial creek with neither a paddle or a boat!
Horses need room to graze when they aren't 'working'. They also need lots of feed, clean water and care (hoof trimming, shoes, shots to keep them healthy, etc)
Then there is this real big kicker.(Yeah, that could be a pun, sorry.) They are alive. They have moods and they have their ways of getting revenge if they decide they don't like you or are just pissed. And believe me when a 1400 pound horse steps on your foot.. you know it. So you have to know how to work with them, respect them, and care for them. You also have to perform that care everyday even if you don't 'use' them, unlike a car or other machine that you can just park in a garage and forget.
So no, you wouldn't save a lot of money. You'd just be spending it on something different.
Oh, and did I mention you also have to clean up after them? But then horse manure can really make roses and tomatoes, among other plants, really happy.
