Skipping gears on a manual transmission?

Question:
My car is a 6 speed manual. In light driving, I go from 1st to 3rd to 6th. Is skipping gears anyway bad for the transmission?

Answers:

What exactly is a SMART car, whats so smart about it??

I don't know, but I did this for years on my cars and I'm the kind that keeps cars for at least 150K miles. Never had a tranny go bad. I love how it feels to skip the gears.

not bad for trans but hard on drive shafts and totally wipes out any gas mileage you hoped for.

no, as long as you have enough rpm and power to get the car going then it's not an issue

I'll sometimes start out from a stand in second gear. I just hold in the clutch for a bit longer

also I might go from 3rd to 5th because third gets me up and going enough that 5th can grab the bottom rpms and take it from there. I don't rev high but at 4k revs in 3rd 5th can take it

Skipping gears shouldn't harm the transmission, but I would think that you would be either underpowered when shifting up or you are overpowered (high rpm's) on the lower gear when shifting.

It can't really hurt much. Since you have six gears, they are probably spaced closer together than most 4-5 speed transmissions.

As long as it shifts smoothly, it shouldn't hurt anything.

NO, NOT AT ALL, BUT IT CAN BE HARD ON THE CLUTCH IF YOUR NOT CAREFULL NOT TO SLIP IT, AND ITS NOT GOOD FOR YOUR GAS MILLEAGE, BUT IF YOUR CAR HAS THE POWER, AND YOUR NOT SLIPPING THE CLUTCH ITS NOT BAD FOR IT, I DO IT IN MY 6SPD ALL THE TIME

One of my friends has a 97 camero z28 with a 6 speed manual. there is a light that comes on when he is driving that says it is ok to go from 1st to 3rd. It's supposed to give you better milage.
So, I have to say, I don't think it is messing anything up. But I question jumping the 2 gears to go from 3rd to 6th.

How do i do this one?

As long as you are NOT having to let the clutch out slowly, (excessive wear/heat), or causing a lurching of the vehicle, (slapping u-joints, tranny slap, along with rear-end slap), not any problem.
However, if you are performing this with any of the forementioned symptoms, you will cause a wide array of damage that is expensive to repair.

Is it true that you can wash the paint off of a car?

no, just as long as the rpms are at the proper speed.

Do you think you are a better driver than the average person?

No, but then arent really driving economically. If you want you can pull away in sixth, i did it once in a 350z. You have 6 gears, just use them. Some of us only have four. :-(
