Today's batteries simply will not stand up to the beating required in the real world. Consider how long the battery in your current car lasts, how much it costs to replace, and the hassle you go through to get rid of the old one with all the nastiness they contain. Now multiply that times 20 (about how many 12V batteries you would need) and you begin to see the problem. GM tried with the EV1; it almost bankrupted them.

Electric plants typically run on coal--so even if there isn't a tailpipe on the car, there is a smokestack out there. And while oil is drilled from the ground, coal is strip mined. Which is better for the earth?Aside from that, the current electric cars aren't all that practical. While a truly efficient car--say, a Porsche Turbo--can go over 150 mph on a full tank or its last quart, the typical electric is capable of about 70 to a half charge, then drops off quickly. That Porsche can be refueled at any number of conveniently located gasoline stations. The electric car usually requires a specialized plug to recharge it. Finally, that Porsche can be filled with enough gas to go several hundred miles in a matter of minutes. An electric car usually requires an overnight charge to go about seventy miles--and that's without using the lights, defroster or heater/air conditioning.

The reason is simple. No gas powered cars...no need to buy gas. What would the oil people do to get richer. Back yard mechanics have made electirc cars, trucks,motorcycles ect. Some going over 150mph and range from a few miles to unlimited miles. These cars have all the features of gas cars. Heaters A/C ect. The small man can't aford to mass product them like Ford,GM ect can. Also when a electric car is made the auto makers buy up their patent or rights and hold then so they can't be built. Don't forget the US goverment gives the big auto Companies tax breaks for produceing big gas burning SUV's So we are forsed to buy gas cars and not offered true Electric cars. You will be surprised what you see.technically we will never run out of gas as one day the drilling for oil will be too expensive for average people to use then we will abandon oil for other fuels
we did have electric cars, GM made the EV1 to accomedate the ZEV(zero emission vehicle) mandate posted by California. the car was only sold in arizona and california, had limited advertising, and was only leased out for a while then forced the customer to give it back with no buy out option. the car requires no maintenance and no fluids since theres no moving parts. the car can go 90miles on a single charge and up to 75mph. GAS COMPANIES LOST MONEY BECAUSE OF IT AND GOVERNMENT LOST TAX FROM GASOLINE SALES. GAS WAS CHEAPER THAN WATER WHEN THE EV1 WAS AVAILABLE SO SALES WERE LOW. California eventually abandoned the ZEV mandate
