Why are there 5 speed automatic engines in cars these days?

When should you use those other speeds other than Drive? Why would I ever use 3 or 4 in an automatic?

This is a 5 speed transmission and the 5th gear is overdrive to save fuel.
If you drive alot intown driving you only need 4th gear untill you exceed over 45 mph,then go to 5th.

The lower gears provide more torque. so this would help in snow and ice and crap other than asphalt. plus when your in Drive it must start at a low gear otherwise the engine would stall out.

Other then snow and ice just let the transmission do its job. You use the 3rd and 4th gears all the time. You’re just unaware that the transmission is doing its job. The newer cars are designed to give you the maximum power with the maximum fuel efficiency.
