Question:
I'm looking for the metal workers out there... I'm going to be making some engine turned steel pieces for my dash out of some stainless... My question is about the metal, is stainless treated on the serface some how and would need to be sealed again after, or is the metal it's self resinaint to rust.

It is a type of alloy that is self resistant to corrosion it self. There are different types of stainless steels: when nickel is added, for instance, the austenite structure of iron is stabilized. This crystal structure makes such steels non-magnetic and less brittle at low temperatures. For higher hardness and strength, carbon is added. When subjected to adequate heat treatment these steels are used as razor blades, cutlery, tools etc.Do I have to have 9 months of holding my permit before I can take behind the wheel?
The metal itself is resistant to rust, just keep it away from extreme heat (don't cut it with a torch or plasma cutter)as it will take the stainless properties out of it and rust.how to clean cylinder head and pack it for shipping?
The metal is not "treated" any way. What makes it "stainless" is the composition of the metals used in the alloy(a mixture of two or more metals). You can do engine turning on it and dont have to coat it to keep it from rusting. You also CAN weld it as long as you use stainless welding rod/wire. The reason it rusts after welding is that people that don't know better use mild or carbon steel rod/wire and that is what is rusting. I have done this kind of work on a couple show cars and it gets a lot of attention. Becoming a lost art.More Questions & Answers ...
