I've gone through stuff like that, once they towed my white BMW and took out the gate remote another time I had a newer one, (car) and got towed, they scratched it and didn't put it on a flat bed and it goes on and on, they are the worst nightmare, don't let them get away with it, if you don't get in by talking to the owner, let them know you'll see them in court, see if that will make them give it up. Try to record the conversation if you have a mic. recorder.
