Question:
Me and my family were talking and my stepdad was the only who knew that. Not even the waitress. I was just wondering if most people know that..
Answers:
Since their customers often were not familier with the different cars that they rented on business trips, vacations, etc. the manufacturer started doing this as a convenience feature.
Not all vehicles have it, but the next time you rent a vehicle, you'll see why it's a good idea.

i own a shop, and yes they started doing this a few years ago ,it saves a lot of confusion for some people ,although most people don't even pay that much attention to it ,but it has been there and even I'm guilty of forgetting once in a wile which side the cap is on,id say some people don't know its there though, its probably a good idea that you brought it up again, good luck.Do Americans not drive manual/stick-shift gearbox cars?
Only some cars seem to have this. If the gas gauge is on the same side of the dash as the filler cap, they sometimes don't bother (my wife's 97 Pontiac GP doesn't have an arrow - the gas cap is on the driver's side, as is the fuel gauge. My 01 Focus has the arrow, the cap is on the passenger side, and the fuel gauge is on the right end of the instrument panel.)As far as I know, they don't have to, so maybe it's up to the manufacturer - or maybe they only started doing it since 97.
