Overdrive on or off?

Question:
I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 turbo diesel and I was just curious as to what Overdrive does and should I drive with it on or off? I seem to have better pick-up with it off... but what do I know? Any help please?? Thank you!!

If modern cars are full of 21st century technology, how come they're still powered by 19th century technology?

The overdrive does not affect your srat up or determine the speed that you may take off at from a stop. Your overdive is an extra gear in the high range ( after third gear or fourth) which automatically clicks in when the motor hits a certain speed.( That is if you have it on). This device makes the motor turn less revolutions or a lower RPM rate which helps the motor and saves on gasoline. Usually the best to have it on is when travelling on a highway where your speed is fairly constant. One can usually do 80/85 mph per 2,000 RPM which is good and saves a lot of gas. With it off, your motor would be running at over 3,000 RPM for the same speed.

On or off will not affect the pick up of the vehicle. An overdrive allows the transmission to constant velocity in its highest gear.
This allows less drag on the engine and creates a smoother ride and better gas mileage.
This gear does not have any effect on the other gears.
You should only turn it off on wet or snowy pavement.

From what i've been told leave the overdrive off in the city or if you are towing a big load. When you get it up to freeway speed with a load it is ok to put it in overdrive. Now that was a few years ago and I know with my dads truck he leaves it in overdrive all the time for the gas mileage.

any idea where i can find a used forty foot (40') gooseneck flat bed trailer?

Driving with your overdrive "on" will have no affect on your pick-up. If you drive with it on you will increase your fuel mileage and put less wear on your engine. Overdrive is no more than another gear for a higher range.

anyone know a organsation that will put hand controls on my car as i am handicaped. i live in southwest?

the overdrive is a high gear designed for highway speeds to reduce the rpm and save gas. you will get better performance with it off as you save the last shift into overdrive and your fine driving in the city with it off, if your on the highway, turn it on to save fuel

hi there, well overdrive is the very last gear the trans shifts into and has nothing to do with low speed driving, if it feels like it drives any differently with it on or off under about 45 or 50mph then its purely imaginary
