Since ethanol is a renewable fuel source, you theoretically would never run out of fuel for liquid-fueled vehicles. Brazil has been using large amounts of ethanol as a vehicle fuel for many decades. I have read that 80% of new vehicles sold in Brazil are flexible fuel. They can run on alcohol, gasoline or any combination. This has limited, or in fact may have eliminated, Brazil's dependence on imported fossil fuels. Brazil, being a mostly tropical country, is able to grow its alcohol base (sugar cane - as you said) easily.the united states is starting to use ethanol (alcohol) to run a gasoline-hybrid mix. it will probably go to a mass transportation only using the ethanol mix, mostly because even though it is cheaper, the ethanol mix does not burn as well as gasoline (it doesn't get as much energy). this is probably the same with sugarcane ethanol, but in brazil there aren't as many emission regulations for vehicles.
