4WD has limited slip on the front axle, which can cause serious problems on dry pavement if you're turning the wheel; because the inside wheel needs to go slower then the outside one. It works great in dirt and snow, making the vehicle "claw" through whatever. 4WD is something you have to switch into, with locking hubs on the front. Good 4WD systems don't make you get out and manualy lock the hubs.
4wd is selective as in you must shift into 4wd from 2wd.

I suspect that which one a car is labeled depends on which one the company's graphic desigerns thought would look better in a logo.
