Question:
We are always hearing the anti-4X4 crowd bleating on about how only people who need 4X4s should be allowed to own them. Extending this arguement, what spec should the ideal car have? Obviously it should have a top speed of 70mph, and I suppose a 0-60 of about 12 secs would be ample. It would be small, and only have the number of seats the owner would use. It would be tuned for economy and low emissions. I suppose the biggest car allowed would be about the size of an Astra? Fancy attachments such as alloy wheels, low profile tyres and noisy exhausts would be banned, as would stereos with more than about 2 watts per channel, anything louder wouldn't be needed, as it would prevent good driving. And when anew model came out it would last for 10 years or so, until worthwhile improvements made a newer model practical. Any other opinions?

Aston Marton Vanquish!! Nice!slow cars are dangerous. 0-60 in 12 seconds is simply unacceptable. When happens when you are trying to merge onto the highway and traffic is going 70mph.. it's going to take you 15 seconds to hit 70? That's a long time to avoid certain death. 0-60 would be as fast as physics allows. Perhaps they could install special electric booster motors that have capacitors for instant bursts of speed when needed. They would be small, light and agile, but with maximized interior space. They would get 40-50 MPG.

essenitally something like the Honda Fit/Jazz with an electric booster engine system so it could get up to speed faster.

The ideal car is different for every person. We all have different tastes, desires, needs, jobs, family sizes, commutes and social lives. We all live in different places, with different road and weather conditions. You can't force a family of two adults and 4 kids to use an Astra-sized car as it can only legally (and safely) carry 5 people, but similarly an Astra may be much larger than a young single person (or a retired person) needs.
You can't outlaw 4x4s when some people live in muddy or snowy areas, or in towns where the local authorities fit speed-humps that damage normal cars with less ground clearance and less robust suspension. If you provide a car with the power for 0-60 in 12 seconds, it will easily top 100mph unless you add an electronic restrictor, and adding such electronics would mean that on motorways the drivers will switch off rather than concentrating on their driving.
If a new model had to stay in production for 10 years, then the manufacturer of that model would go out of business, as customers switched to newer models from other manufacturers - new models are not developed because the manufacturer fancies one, but because the investment in a new one will be paid for by improved sales compared to keeping the old one on sale.
By restricting the type of car a manufacturer can produce, you will restrict their reason and ability to invest in new technology, so reducing the speed at which new safety and environmental technologies are introduced.
