Is the astra 2.0 litre turbo a gas guzzler ?

According to my experience (20 years in auto inspections business), rover is one of the worst brands next to jaguar, sterling, and suchlike. The highest number of INDEPENDENT defects I witnessed on a single vehicle was 18(!). This "achievement" had been recorded four times out of about 15,000, and one of them was rover. Three others - in case you are curious - were mercedes, cadillac, and pontiac.

In the car it has a 1, 2, and 3 gears. what is that for? and power button?

Crankshaft bearing journals not properly machined resulted in too tight a tolerance and engine failure.
Valve stem oil seals not getting install resulting in piston failure.
Air bubbles in alloy casting of engines and cylinder heads resulting in either an unsealable gasket surface, or porous waterways.
Wiring earth points not being tightened inside the car resulting in bad/non start, rough running etc etc.
Poor drainage in the bulkhead area resulting in water retention (several litres) and a soaked engine ecu.
15" tyres that were exposed to (and mostly exceeded) the tyre makers maximum loading when the car was loaded.
Diesel injectors that couldn't be removed without taking the cylinder head of and pressing them out, thus destroying them.
Air conditioning pipes poorly routed causing chaffing and punctures.
A massive cooling fan which span that fast it atomised water (and dirt) so well it passed easily through the air filter causing the air flow meter to go.
Clutch noises.
Dual mass flywheel failures.
Airbag connectors corroding.
Automatic gearboxes destroying themselves.
A bolt which looks like a filler plug on the auto box is actually holding a major internal component. Release it and the box needs stripped.
Coils arcing, corroding then eventually stop working.
Coil springs breaking overnight when parked. In a workshop.
Not enough sealer on the oil pick-up pipe resulting in oil starvation to the cylinder head.
Alloy wheels corroding to the hub which need excessive force to remove them.
