What is the proccess for taking driving lessons (UK)?

A friend told me that once i have obtained my provisional, I have to take some kind of test before the lessons, then the lessons and then anouther test.
Is this true?

When I did it about 2 years ago you just got your povisional and then got lessons, hte first lesson you have usually is just a run through about how the car works and what everything does then you might drive a bit, depends on how you are and how your instructor is. I went with BSM who weren't cheap but I got a good service and they want you to pass first time and to not do too many lessons (some private instructors take their time a bit too much as they obviously get more money the more lesson's they give you).
