Need to add horsepower to wife's '94 4Runner?

My wife's been concerned with the acceleration of her '94 4Runner. It's a 4 cylinder and has been kept up incredibly well. The problem is it just doesn't pick up when you need it to. Pulling on to the freeway is actually kinda dangerous. Anyone have any suggestions to improving the acceleration, without spending too much money?

Turbo chargers and nitrous kits are not a good way to gain hp
the engine must be in great mechanical condition and also reworked to accept any of these kits,you would risk major engine damage without rebuilding correctly.Try a K&N filter,new plugs and an efi service .Acceleration is not this vehicles strong point to start.

A turbo or a nitrous oxide kit are way too complicated and way too expensive for it to be practical at all. If you want to improve your cars horsepower, there are some things you can do. You can buy a cold-air or ram-air intake which go for about 150-250 dollars. You can also replace the intake manifold which would be about the same price. All of these things are OK for you to do yourself if you are even a little bit mechanically inclined. If these don't solve the problem, you can also try replacing your exhaust headers. All of these modifications will give you about 5-10 horsepower each, and improved gas mileage even on regular gas, the only problem is that there will be increased engine noise.
A third option would be to buy a add-on or a replacement chip, which can be costly but will definitely increase your horsepower.
