I personally like the Citroen my hubby has a Ford Focus which fits your requirements. we always have diesels but you can choose a petrol! Consider too whether the spares are easy to obtain Fords are one of the easiest and that there is a dealership (for specialised items) again Fords are high on numbers, within easy travelling distance! I would also consider the cost of Road tax! It varies now on power, size & fuel type. You should reconsider the Japanese if you want reliabilty. The best we owned was a nissan!Things to check out before road trip?
well in answer to your question,,, i thought one criteria was 6 popular,,, you said volvo or saab. but saying that i have had a couple of volvos, a 440 and an S40 I had a vectra 1.8ls which was a nice motor and also my baby was a w reg mondeo 2.0i zetecmodel. if thats too big then a focus could be good 2.0zetec model. or the st170 but im not sure how good that is on fuel.if ever you need a reliable car its has to be japanese
Honda or Nissan for the money you are willing to spend there are some powerful economic japanese cars
I live in British Columbia Canada and want to tour europe by road in MY CAR how do i do it?thanks.?
Im after a nissan 200sx,,,,,,,but thats for a bit or track drifting lol
serioulsly though mud, dont rule out Jap cars.
you would be advisable looking at either a Ford Focus, or alternatively a second hand Golf. I say this because these cars are not only very popular but hold their values better than most other makes and models. They are economical and fit all the general criteria as far as boot space and that sort of thing. If I remember rightly, a Focus comes in around the group six mark to start with on insurance and you can look to get 30 to 40 MPG combined out of it. Don't go for a diesel unless you are doing 15k to 25 k miles per year as it really doesnt work out any cheaper unless you are, your initial outlay will be about a grand more for a diesel and you will save about £100 per year if you put those kind of miles in, unless you were one of those lucky people who get a diesel increment from work! You should be able to pick up a fairly decent five year old Focus saloon or hatchback with a zetec engine for £5k quite easily. If you are willing to drop the spec i.e no alloys etc, you can bargain down to £3500 and so on. If you are going to a dealer, you need to ask these sort of questions. 1. What does the car book at for trade in Cap and Glasses guides. That will tell you roughly what they will have paid for it and at the same time tell you what you can expect to get for it if you trade back in straight away for any reason. 2. Ask them how much the car owes them. Deduct this figure from the Sale price and you will see how much they are making in profit. 3. Ask them what their prep bill is? If it's high it means the car has had a lot of work done to it to get it to selling standard. Not always a good thing. If its really low, it means oil change and new plugs! If the car has around 65k miles, has cam belt been done? 4 If it's less then 3years old, insist on full service history. There is no way you are going to get a Saab or Volvo for your money unless its a shed! Check around the doors and bumpers for filler or shade diffs in paint and finally ALWAYS insist on a HPI check. And consider a Skoda, they may be a joke, but everyone who I have sold one to NEVER wants to trade it in. They are the same as a golf but cheaper, most economical, lowest service bills per annum and cheap to insure, coz nobody thinks about nicking them! They also have nice little extras on them and look as good as any other hot hatch!
