It's an automatic transmission with gear selection like in the older classic muscle cars with ratchet type selector on the drive shaft hump between the seats.Kind of like the "slap stick" in the older Dodge Chargers.

You have the option... usually there's a "T" gate next to the D which you'd shift the gear selector into, and then knock the selector forwards and backwards to shift through the gears. It depends on the car though.i think that's th one where U have the option of using the manual up-shift/ down-shift.
