Sounds like the clutch, I have a 405 with a slipping clutch and have been quoted £400/£500 for a new one. As it is 12 years old I think I will live with it, when it gives up I will scrap it. Go easy with the accelerator it will last longer and you will get a better MPG.It,s because of the VELOCITY JOINT. Have it check and that's what the shop representative will tell you. Velocity joint can only be seen in a front-wheel drive vehicle(FF) or sometimes in a 4WD or 4X4.

Well, you can also check how the clutch is placed, it might be sliding (factory defect).

To find out if this is a clutch problem....start the car...apply the handbrake fully...engage first gear....try to pull away....if the engine revs without stalling then it is your clutch that is slipping.if the back end of your car starts to go down then and the car stalls then it is not your clutch.Which car manufacturer do you feel produces better cars?
best way to see if it's your clutch is ...start the car pull the hand brake up tight put it in 3rd gear and pull away normally.
If your car stalls straight away then it;s fine but if it Carry's on running then that's what your problem is.
does it lose a lot of oil ?
