I have a 1997 Ford Explorer with RWD, a five speed automatic, and a 4.0 SOHC and I was wondering if anyone knows how to do a burnout in this car or one like it. I know there are risk of damaging it and that it wears out the tire but I don't mind. I would appreciate any help, thanks.

PS. Please don't just start criticising the Explorers because its a pretty good car, these engines were built in Cologne, Germany, and the only reason so many Explorers rolled over was because the Firestone tires and the drivers not reacting right. Thanks.

They are not burn out cars. The only way is to step on the brake and floor it in drive. This is known as brake torquing. It should break the rear wheels loose and have them spin. If you have ABS or other safety items like control trac turn them off or you'll really start doing damage.

I don't want to criticize you , but don't do it. The SUV is too heavy and the tires are too wide for a 6 cylinder to start spinning the tires. I hate to see good machinery mistreated, mainly because I usually have to fix it.

to do a burnout an any vehicle that has an automatic transmission all you have to do is hold the brake with your left foot lightly just so the car wont move forward, then hammer down on the gas until the tires go to spinning. this is called power braking. then to complete the burnout let off of the brake and you should continue spinning the tires for a short period of time depending on how fast your tires catch traction. You’re going to break something. Fist off it's difficult to make this SUV do a burn out. You lose 40 % of you power from the transmission and transfer case. So you may not have the power to get anything more then a chirp or small howl out of it. Taking it up to 5000 RPM will most likely snap the shaft of the transmission or crank shaft (These motors have a soft crankshaft) or you will have so much slippage in the clutch that you will burn the clutch up. The burn out will be minor. Nothing like what you see on TV or at the races. now if you want to get a decent burn out and make a little bit of smoke, while you are going around a corner stab the accelerator as you are going around and you should get some smoke out of the right side rear tire. Be careful to not lose you center of gravity while doing this. That drive line was just not designed for this kind of abuse. Good luck.i own a shop and just raise the engine speed up to about 3 thousand rpms,and pop the clutch out then floor it and it will literally smoke the tires on it,it may burn a few other things out in the process,but it will also do a real good burn out ,good luck with it.
