What gases come out of NEW diesels.?

Since new diesels have gained cats or particualte filters or whatever... they are really choking me. I am a keen cyclist - but also have asthma. When some peenarse in a new diesel something or other company car nails it past me, it smells like chlorine or some acrid acidic gas is coming out... It really screws up your lungs...
The old smoky diesels have no effect - - as if the carbon is retaining this rather noxious gas.

For a truck expert. Why do older trucks side mirrors stick out very far out? (like elephant's ears)?
