Why do concept cars never make it to production as is?

Question:
I was checking out the QarmaQ concept car and thought to myself that it was the coolest car I ever saw. Then again I've said that about many concept cars. The thing is these cars never make it to production. Instead its the same old crappy boring designs. Is it because the concept cars don't even work? If so why even show them off. Why would I be impressed with a company that makes a nice looking car that doesn't even function? Or maybe its obscenly expensive to make?

Answers:

What is your dream car?

Concept cars are usually only to gague the publics reaction to the "concept". Alot of times there are special features and attributes that would either never sell in the real world or that would just be too costly or time consuming to mass produce. They might have crazy doors that open in an unconventional manner.. and they might look really cool but at the same time would be totally impractical in the real world. Maybe the car is far too low to ever be driveable on the street. Maybe it would not meet crash test standards as is, and it needs to be modified. Ultimately they want the car to appeal to a wide audience, so they have to tone down some of the radical styling queues so as not to put anyone off. On some rare occasions concept cars do come out very close to thier original form, but that tends to be the exception not the rule.

What is More Powerful a Carburetor or Fuel Injection?

Contrary to popular belief, there have quite a few "concept" cars that have gone from drawing board to mass production. The Chrysler 300, Dodge Viper, Ford Mustang, and yes even the GM Corvette are all concept to productions cars. The most recent are of course from Chrysler. But, it is too often true that the production cost of these cars often outweigh the concept. Look around and you will see what each manufacturer has made from concept to production on several streets.
