I'm also buying my first car and i 'd like to have a used one and how do i know that it would really work well

I'm kind of scared to buy a used car for the reason that later, it might not work that good not like the brand new ones that they're really work the best but since my budget couldn't afford it yet so i would like to ask on how to determine a good quality of a used car that will work long enough in the long run .........i don't know what to look on them........please help!
