apparently, the current law is that the front windows should let at least 70% light through on ALL vehicles. I think the rear windows should let at least 30% light through.
And yes it's a bit of a jab at boy racers, but the fact was that more under 25s with really dark front windows had accidents where they didn't see something.

Don't know reference but seem to remember you need 90% light penetration on windscreen and 75% through front side windows.
