Of course it's greed. Anyway for the oil companies to make money. They know that we all need to buy gas and even if we had no cars, and we took public transportation, we would still have to rely on gasoilne to fill the buses or taxis that we take.

Back in July, crude was over $70 a barrel and gas was around $3 per gallon. Today crude is around $60 and gas in my area is now right at $2. If anything, I'd say that the drop in gas prices (33%) has far exceeded the drop in crude prices (14%).
