You are not seriously tested on your ability to drive, or your ability to handle common road emergencies. You also don't have to know anything about how to detect and repair common mechanical problems.
Why do tractor trailers have the word "FISH" on the back doors?
People with Commercial Drivers Licenses have to know ALL of that stuff and more. CDL licence holders have to understand how their vehicle works, and how to maintain it - plus they have to prove they can safely operate it.

I agree; but, until you get rid of some to the politics with drivers license you will never get rid of stupidity in it. Do you have any idea how much money the Big Three Auto Makers contribute to Politics? You have any idea how much money is spent on vehicle purchase, auto repairs, tires, oil, gas, insurance. Think about all the tax revenue generated with the aforementioned. Now; I ask you, Why is drivers licenses so easy to get? I too have a CDL and this year it ran me $168.00 to renew with haz-mat. There's bigger money in CDL's but; you screw up and you will never drive again and lose everything you got because other people got a license so easily in America.Can I rent a car w/o the extra surcharge if I'm under 25?
Well i'm 15 and in north carolina you can get your permit in high school at no cost then after about a year you get your license. but there is a process. you will have to pay for classes but there not to stressful then you talke the driving part and then you wait to see if you pass.It is easier to get one in the states than in Europe you learn 1/2 what Europeans do..

Yes it's too easy. The problem is you need a vehicle to get around and everyone votes. I grew up in NY, live in Southern California now. I've been a professional driver, and I am amazed more people haven't killed themselves or others.I would support higher standards and proven car handling skills like skid recovery, not parallel parking.
I see people drive slow in the left lane, read books, apply make up, cut people off every day. The political solution is to make the car safer, because cars can't vote.
You sound like an Un-informed CDL driver. Or a CDL wannabe. Granted, if you have a CDL license, you have to be able to spot a discrepancy on your vehicle, and have to perform an air brake check, but that is about the extend of the "extra" stuff. (I had a CDL for several years). But, tell me honestly.to do an actual air-brake check and a complete check of the vehicle, it takes a whole lot more than the minimum 15 minutes that DOT requires. Yet, I'll bet my last dollar, there isn't any CDL driver out there that actually puts down the time that they spend, if any actually checking what they are supposed to check.
And, why do they put all of those restrictions on CDL operators? 'cause they can. The average Joe doesn't care about the trucker, and the truckers won't or can't stick together as a group.
A great example is if your stuck on the highway in a big truck, every other trucker will call you on the CB to see if help is on the way. no one will stop to help you fix anything. But show up for a delivery early, and be #25 in line, fall asleep, and when you wake up, your all alone. The ones in front of you could care less, and the ones behind will gladly move up.

I agree that getting a drivers' license in America is too easy. I think that they also need to go back and re-test people every 5 years or whatever the time is when they have to renew their license. There are plenty of older people who simply CAN NOT DRIVE, especially on highways (you always hear reports of an old person running through a market). I also think that 16 is too young, it should be 18. I shouldn't have been behind the wheel when I was 16 (I never had a wreck and still haven't, but I did some dumb things).No, it isn't too easy. The problem is all the unlicensed drivers. I meet them all the time. Someone gave me a ride home and I wondered why they were taking back streets. They didn't have a license or liability insurance.

The law about having to have proof of liability BEFORE getting a drivers' license is actually backfiring. Since there is so much red tape, some people don't bother. They break the laws instead.
