there are two people who have answer part of the question correctly the wheel house one and the boat fits on a ship one . however there is a point to consider and that is that the legnth of the boat/ ship is defined withing the laws of the sea . the laws of the sea are mostly old and were written in a large part by the British . once a boat. ship is large enough and i don't remember the exact size but its about 75 feet then it is a vessel . in Canada and in all Commonwealth countries the vessel is then not fully owned by one person instead 1/3 of it is the property of the queen and her governments may require the use of it at any timethis was done in world war 2 in the great evacuation from Europe on the first attempt to enter it by the allies mostly Canada and the British . all the vessels in the ports in England had to travel to Europe to rescue the soldiers .
the law is still very much enforced to this day .so in the real answer is that the ships / boats are all vessels after 75 feet and this is also international law but the rest of the distingson is made as per the people that i mentioned at the start. however ship and boat over 75 does not matter same laws apply as they are then vessels the rest is just done as a matter of description without legal requirement.
