The line was passed from one vessel to another, then the item being transshipped would be fastened to it (suspended by anything from a simple loop of line or a pulley. Then a messenger line was thrown to the other vessel. the other crew pulled and the sending crew held the other end. after the transfer the sending crew pulled everything back.
