Hi!Royal Yachting Association in the UK have a national cruising scheme. It breaks down roughly like this:-
Competent crew (practical) no knowledge needed.
Day Skipper (theory) some crew experience desirable
Day Skipper (practical) basic navigation and sailing ability req'd
Watch leader (practical) basic nav and ship sailing ability req'd
Yachtmaster offshore (theory) good navigation level req'd
Yachtmaster (practical) nav to yachtmaster theory standard req'd and 300miles sailing logged including minimum of 8 night hours and at least two days as skipper of a vessel.
Yachtmaster ocean(theory) yachtmaster offshore navigation ability and offshore sailing experience req'd
There are several supplementary courses that complement a yachtsmans ability at sea, such as sea survival, VHF radio, first aid, engine maintenance etc

If you are serious about sailing, then I urge to visit my website and read the FREE information pages on safety and survival. A look at the grab bags pages would be very helpful too, I believe.
