head gasket maybe? by removing the head you can tell exactly what the problem is. if the pistons/cylinders look good, it's the gasket.

take out the spark plugs , turn the engine over, make sure the pistons are moving up and down. use a flashlight and look inside
if they are moving squirt some oil in the plug holes and check again. if it now has compression the rings are stugk or worn. if not it is probably the head gasket. good luck
