Question:
I have a '79 bayliner with a volvo penta 270 in/out engine. When my buddies and i hit the water with it, it's really hard to get any significant speed, i think 15-20 is about all it will do. The bow of the boat is always way up in the air when we have it full throttle, and we have noticed that if we get three full grown guys to sit on the bow we get a lil better speed. I was curious if maybe i threw a 17 pitch prop on there we would no longer have to sit on the bow, and could actually sit and enjoy the ride and get to the new fishing spot before we have to turn around and get home.. any help would be great. thank you in advance.

My boy friend is still missing after his boat capsized?
The problem you may be having could be operator error. When you first start out your outdrive should be all the way down . Even when you come to a stop and begin again in the water. Once the boat starts to get on plane you trim up the bow. The idea is the more air that is under the front of the hull (on plane ) the faster the boat goes.
As far as the prop goes its important to make sure you are in the correct RPM range for your engine . This engine should be running between 4200 to 4600 RPM fully trimmed
If you go over max RPMs you can damage engine as well as under rated RPMs you are lugging engine this will damage engine.
Take your boat out and properly trim it out and see where your RPMs are at then decide which pitch you have to go to stay in range.
Remember speed is not as critical as RPMs. Many factors affect speed such as current wind .properly tuned engine, etc
you didnt state which model Bayliner you have but if its one of the larger ones they have rep as being slow.due to its size and weight.
Also remember the more people and gear you have will affect speed.
You need to adjust the outdrive so that when it is in the DOWN position, it's further down. When it's not far enough down, the force of the egine pushes the stern of the boat deeper into the water causing the bow to rise. When the bow is high the boat cannot plane. That's why it helps to put your two buddies in the front. Also you may have a prop pitched for power (water skiing), a higher pitched prop will help with top speed. Find the pitch on your prop (usually stamped on it) and call your local marine dealer to find out which type is installed on your boat.
I am planning in buying a Boat, the make is Sail-Fish.?
the pitch ain`t ur problem, try a dolfin, make sure that the tilt function of the motor is operating properly, also ask another boater on the water-do u have trim tabs?if so learn to use them-dude enjoy ur boatIn the Old Sailing ships, what was ment by a Grass line?
The pitch on propellers are for either speed, or power. It sounds like your problem may be trim tabs, with functioning trim tabs you shouldn't need anyone to sit on the bow. Hope you find this helpful.More Questions & Answers ...
