Question:
Took the boat out one night, next morning hooked the water suction cups to it with running water. Turned it on, started fine, water ran thru pee hole. Shut it off. Water hose still connected and running. Started the motor up again, heard a small pop by the motor, engine turned on but no water from pee hole now. Water pump/ impeller? Thermostat? Any ideas?

First of all pop out the thermostat, clean it up, then place in hot water to see if the valve opens correctly, if not replace it. The water pump and impeller are the same. Using a hose with muffs applies pressure to the system and would therefore allow a good water flow, running the engine with the muffs attached will achieve the same result as the impeller has little work to do. Running the engine in water without muffs makes the impeller do the pumping, if that is damaged then you will get little or no water flow through the engine. Check the impeller and replace whether its bad or not. The latter I am sure is your problem.

i don't believe outboards have thermostats...but i could be wrong. check the water pump impeller,it's probably bad...located in the lower unit.

don't know about the "pop". only thing i can think of is maybe the t-stat clicked open. but it seems like water should have flowed at that point. check it out thoroughly before anymore running.

May have been impeller separating from bushing, impellers are only small rubber wheels that resemble nothing more than a flat octopus, that spin inside a stainless housing, take it in to mechanic, or split leg yourself and check. there are some very good manuals available on outboard maintenance
