Boiling bags?

Question:
I am going out on my first weekend sailboat adventure. We have a very tiny galley with just an ice chest and propane burner. I was wondering about making up some dinners beforehand and putting them in boiling bags and then just heating them up in a pot of boiling water during our outing. I think regular freezer bags that you buy at the store cannot be boiled because they melt. Does anyone cook like this on their boat and, if so, how exactly do you do it for best results? Thanks!

I love to make omlets like this. You take all your ingredients and put them in your bag(it can b from walmart) Let the water in the pot come to a boil and when it boils drop the bag in for about 7 min or so and then check to make sure it is done. if it is your ready to eat if it isnt then put it back in the water. P.S. take the bag out with tongs or something other than fingers. i burnt my hand.

how is a boat sailed against the wind?

This is our method of cooking on most long distance sailboat races. One thing you should note is the portion size when you are bagging as they will displace water in your cooking pot (don't want hot water all over the galley floor in 6 foot seas!).

Can anyone tell me where I can find redneck yacht club flags on the net?

We use vacuum sealed bags (Seal a Meal) as they are a bit thicker than zip locks. You could try the freezer zip lock bags (test it in the home kitchen first) as they should hold up in the hot water.

We did stews, chillis, etc this way and it worked great. The other nice thing about this method is after you cook your meal, your hot water is all ready for instant coffee or hot chocolate.

With P&O ferries, what does P&O stand for ?

Boil-in bags would probably work. I have more problem keeping food on board before we got a refrigerator/freezer on our sailboat. You just couodnt keep meat on ice for long. I have taken stew frozen in a jar. I usually take a ham, cheese, eggs, dried foods, root vegetables, canned food, ec. Cooking was not the problem.

take whatever you want to eat--tiny galleys usually mean alcohol stoves--they do not heat as well or hot as propane or kerosene.

boil bag meals are good in that case, as are tuna sammiches.
