Question:
I really want to get in to the professional side of sailing, competitive or otherwise. My dream jobs would either be as part of a racing yacht crew or a yacht designer. The thing is I am 21 and about to graduate in an entirely unrelated degree- have I already shot myself in the foot?
Moving the boat to another state.?
I only got in to sailing since I started Uni and whilst I have no practical experience of life on the waves (but I've read everything!) I really, really want a job connected with yachting, either competition or luxury.
what size prop would you expereanced boater use on a 19ft,125 hp force bayliner boat?
I would have thought the design side of things would be beyond my reach without a relevant degree- true?
Scrapes down the center of a Hull a common thing?
Also I am not sure if racing. touring yacht crews even get paid- and how do you get in to it in the first place?
how do you control a ship, do you sail it,pilot it, drive it ?
Which is the better option and what is the most sensible course for me to take? I don't really want to sit through another degree again if I can avoid it- I'm getting old (well, 21)!.
Any help and serious answers would be gratefully recieved- thanks so much!

You should find opportunities to crew on various yachts to get experience on all that you can. For design you do need to study naval architecture. In some yachting magazines there is a listing for crew needed for trips. I know the magazine Spinnaker has listings for the Chesapeake.Within how many hours must a life boat drill be from take off?

If you are looking to get in to the luxury yacht industry try going down to Palma or Antibes and try walking the quays. Have copies of your CV ready . Make sure you have a photo on it as the yachts do get alot of CV and a face is alot easier to remember than a name. Also you could try going to all the crew agencies in Antibes. There are about ten or so. Some are better than others .

Does anyone know the approximate weight of a fiberglass camper shell?
Some racing crews get paid but not many. You could get into yacht designing but it is difficult now. I suggest that you get a job as a shipwright (boat builder) and learn how yachts are made, than you could get into designing with some understanding of how they are built.what is a short abbrevation for "girl"?
You could also get a commercial vessel license and buy a yacht and do racing and cursing charters yourself. They get to fit lights, GPS, auto pilot, electric winches, air conditioners, computers, satellite receivers, internet connections, UHF and VHF radios, sound systems, TV's, surround sound and many other electrical items on yachts. This would involve going up the mast of yachts to look at radars, lights and spreader speakers as well as TV antennas, satellite receivers, and other radio antennas.
when are you required to have a captains license? and what size boat reuires a captains license?
Racing unless professional doesn't pay. Crewing yachts are dream jobs for some depending on the owner and the job dies when the owner sells the boat. Charter services are always looking for EXPERIENCED crewmen. To design boats requires a degree now unless you can scrap up the money to design and build your own boat and then find buyers who like it and can afford it. There is money in buying and selling the boats or by being a surveyor in most states there are no requirements to be a seller or surveyor. I would suggest you keep your day job and race a small sailboat at various regatta's and thus keep the sailor in you placated.ummm i am not too godd with this side of things why dont you get on a instructers course as i did (15) best thing i ever did seeing the smile on childrens faces and stuff and teaching anyone or if your into racing get a advert up at your laocal sailing club
